An emergency meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) National Working Committee has been held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, as the party’s popularity seems to deplete.
Recall that Sheriff Oborevwori, the governor of Delta State, left the party last week in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The internal crisis of the PDP and the wave of defections sweeping through the opposition party’s ranks and strongholds coincide with the Tuesday discussion, which was held behind closed doors.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former PDP vice presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa left the party last week to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Following a closed-door meeting in Asaba, the state commissioners, local government chairmen, Monday Onyeme, the deputy governor, and the state’s grassroots apparatus all joined forces with the APC, shattering the opposition party’s Delta structure.
Ifeanyi Okowa, the former governor of Delta State, had stated that his desire to link the state to the capital city of Abuja was the driving force behind his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Even though there had been some allegations of pressure on the former governor, Okowa, who spoke at the APC welcome ceremony for the defectors on Monday, explained why they left the PDP, stating that it was in Delta State’s best interests.
According to Okowa, the PDP’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, the defection was required to link the state to the riches and goodwill in the Federal Capital Territory.
