The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is gearing up to roll out the 6G spectrum in Nigeria, aiming to broaden access to Wi-Fi technology. At a recent consultative engagement forum in Lagos, industry stakeholders gathered to discuss the efficient management and utilization of spectrum resources, particularly the 6GHz band.
Executive Vice-Chairman (NCC) Aminu Maida, represented by Abraham Oshadami, executive commissioner of technical services at the commission, emphasized the need for additional frequency bands, citing the overcrowding of existing 5G and 2G spectrums. The 6GHz band offers a substantial additional spectrum, crucial for supporting the growing demand for high-speed internet and advanced applications.
Maida highlighted Wi-Fi’s vital role in distributing fixed broadband connectivity and its importance in enterprise settings. However, current Wi-Fi frequencies (5GHz and 2.4GHz) are becoming overwhelmed due to increased demand.
Introducing the 6GHz band would increase capacity, enabling applications like virtual reality and augmented reality. Wi-Fi 6 would provide seamless access and potentially lower costs.
Industry experts, including Professor Caroline Alenoghena and ATCON President Tony Emoekpere, welcomed the development. They noted the potential for start-ups to grow, democratization of access to urban and rural areas, and the need for careful allocation and infrastructure investment.
The forum served as a platform for stakeholders to provide input and recommendations on utilizing the new frequency. The NCC emphasized its commitment to collaborative policy development.
