Nigerian Government Raises Passport Fees

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially announced an increase in passport fees, with the new rates set to take effect on September 1, 2024. This decision was communicated by Kenneth Udo, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), through a statement released on Wednesday.

The adjustment in passport fees is part of a broader effort by the Nigerian government to ensure that the quality and security of the Nigerian passport remain high. By updating the fees, the government aims to support the ongoing enhancements and maintenance of passport standards, which include incorporating advanced security features and improving overall document integrity.

According to the statement, the fee for a 32-page passport booklet with a five-year validity will increase from the previous amount of N35,000 to N50,000. This change reflects a significant adjustment, underscoring the commitment to upholding the quality and reliability of the passport issuance process.

Similarly, the fee for a 64-page passport booklet, which is valid for ten years, will see a rise from N70,000 to N100,000. This increase is intended to cover the costs associated with the extended validity period and the additional security measures that come with the larger booklet.

It is important to note that these new fees will not apply to passports issued abroad. The costs for obtaining a Nigerian passport outside Nigeria will remain unchanged. This distinction is meant to address the needs of Nigerians living abroad, ensuring that they are not adversely affected by the fee increase.

The NIS expressed regret for any inconvenience the fee increase might cause to prospective passport applicants. They acknowledged that the adjustment may be challenging for some individuals and emphasized their dedication to providing transparent and high-quality services.

The NIS reassured citizens that despite the increase in fees, their commitment to delivering effective and transparent service remains steadfast. They emphasized that the adjustment is necessary to maintain the standards of the Nigerian passport, which is a crucial document for international travel and identification.

While the increase in passport fees represents a significant change, it is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the quality and security of Nigerian passports. The NIS remains committed to serving the public with transparency and efficiency, ensuring that the Nigerian passport continues to meet international standards.
