Borno Government Closes Muslim and Christian Cemeteries Due to Health Risks

The Borno State Government has officially announced the closure of the Gwange Muslim Cemetery and the Old GRA Christian Cemetery in Maiduguri, effective from Sunday, September 1, 2024. This decision marks a significant shift in the management of burial sites within the state capital, driven by increasing concerns over overcrowding and public health.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Mohammed Lawan Abubakar, conveyed this update in a statement issued on Wednesday. Abubakar explained that the primary reason for closing these cemeteries is the congestion they are experiencing. Overcrowding in burial sites poses serious health hazards to the surrounding community, prompting the need for new solutions.

In response to the closure, the Borno State Government has arranged alternative burial sites for the respective communities. For the Muslim community, the Dalori Cemetery located along Bama Road has been designated as the new burial ground. This location is expected to accommodate the community’s needs and alleviate the pressure on the existing cemeteries.

Similarly, the Christian community will now use the Maximum Security Christian Cemetery, situated off Baga Road in Maiduguri. This new site will provide a dedicated space for Christian burials, ensuring that community practices and traditions are respected.

The Borno State Government is committed to expanding burial facilities as part of its broader development plans for the area. The government recognizes the need for additional burial sites to keep up with the growing population and urban expansion. To this end, plans are underway to open more burial grounds in the near future, addressing both the immediate and long-term needs of the community.

In addition to these changes, the Ministry of Religious Affairs has taken steps to facilitate the transition. The ministry has purchased six vehicles specifically for transporting bodies to the new cemeteries. This initiative is aimed at easing the burden on families and ensuring that the process of moving to the new burial sites is as smooth as possible.

Abubakar assured the public that the government remains dedicated to managing these changes with sensitivity and efficiency. The Borno State Government is focused on maintaining public health and safety while respecting the cultural and religious practices of its residents. As Maiduguri continues to grow, the government will remain attentive to the needs of its citizens and work diligently to provide adequate and suitable burial facilities.

Overall, the closure of the Gwange Muslim Cemetery and the Old GRA Christian Cemetery is a proactive measure by the Borno State Government to address overcrowding issues and safeguard community health. By establishing new burial sites and providing support for the transition, the government aims to ensure that the needs of the community are met effectively.
