Raphael Varane has announced his departure from Manchester United after the current season, as his contract is set to expire after a three-year tenure at Old Trafford.
The 31-year-old former French defender joined the club from Real Madrid in 2021 for an initial transfer fee of approximately £34 million ($43 million) and has amassed 93 appearances, netting two goals.
Varane played a pivotal role in securing the club’s first trophy in six years, the 2023 League Cup. Despite his United career being marred by injuries, he has not featured since a 4-3 loss to Chelsea on April 4 but aims to return before the end of the season.
In a statement shared on social media, Varane expressed his gratitude to the Manchester United fans, acknowledging the privilege of representing the club and donning its iconic shirt. Manchester United has faced a challenging season, currently positioned eighth in the Premier League standings with 14 defeats, making European qualification seem unlikely. Under the guidance of Erik ten Hag, the team has two remaining league fixtures against Newcastle and Brighton before their FA Cup final clash with Manchester City on May 25th.
