TUC: Fuel Price Increase is an Attack on Nigerian Workers’ Welfare

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has sharply criticized the recent increase in fuel prices by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, calling it a blatant disregard for the well-being of the Nigerian people. According to the TUC, this price hike will exacerbate the already dire economic conditions faced by Nigerian workers, and has demanded an immediate reversal of the decision.

In a statement issued by its president, Festus Osifo, the TUC expressed profound concern over the sudden rise in petroleum product prices, which they believe was implemented without proper consultation with key stakeholders. The TUC argued that this abrupt increase represents a significant burden on the working class, who are already struggling with high living costs and inflation.

The TUC also highlighted the additional strain imposed by a 250% hike in electricity tariffs, which they said is particularly detrimental to the poorest segments of society. They pointed out that these increases come at a time when Nigerians are already experiencing unprecedented economic hardships. The TUC criticized the timing and scale of these hikes, suggesting that they reflect a severe lack of empathy from the government towards ordinary citizens.

The Congress raised concerns about the government’s lack of action on reducing the cost of governance or implementing policies to stabilize and strengthen the naira. They argued that despite their previous recommendations to improve the economy and provide better value for the money spent by Nigerians, little progress has been made in addressing these issues.

The TUC emphasized that the government’s policies should focus on alleviating the suffering of Nigerians rather than adding to their burdens. They argued that the new fuel and electricity price hikes will likely lead to increased social unrest and further economic challenges. The TUC called on the government to reverse these decisions immediately and to adopt measures that will strengthen the naira and improve living conditions for all Nigerians.

In their statement, the TUC reiterated their commitment to defending the rights and interests of Nigerian workers. They promised to continue advocating for policies that promote social justice, fair wages, and a decent working environment. The Congress stressed the importance of restoring confidence among Nigerians and ensuring that their living conditions do not continue to deteriorate.

Overall, the TUC’s statement reflects growing frustration among Nigerian workers and their representatives, highlighting the need for urgent government action to address the worsening economic situation in the country.
