Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent figure in the Labour Party and former spokesperson for its presidential campaign, has lauded Abia State Governor Alex Otti for his decisive actions that have prevented chaos within the party. Okonkwo emphasized that the recent stakeholders’ meeting hosted by Governor Otti effectively served as a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting for the Labour Party.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Okonkwo urged Labour Party members to unite and support the National Caretaker Executive, led by Nenadi Usman, as it works towards organizing the party’s national convention within the next 90 days. This convention is seen as a crucial step for the party’s future and stability.
Okonkwo praised Governor Otti for his leadership and quick response in stabilizing the party during a period of potential upheaval. “Governor Otti has demonstrated that he is a decisive leader who used his insight and experience to prevent disorder in the Labour Party,” Okonkwo said. He noted that the party was on the brink of confusion and disarray, but Otti’s intervention helped to restore order and bring some much-needed stability.
The statement also highlighted the collaborative nature of the recent meeting in Abia. Okonkwo described it as an NEC meeting that involved key stakeholders to ensure broad participation and inclusivity. “What happened in Abia was not just a routine meeting; it was a critical gathering of major players in the party, aimed at fostering unity and collective decision-making,” he explained.
Okonkwo endorsed Senator Nenadi Usman, the new leader of the National Caretaker Executive, praising her for her intelligence, experience, and compassionate approach. He expressed confidence that Usman would guide the party effectively through these challenging times, leveraging her extensive experience and understanding of party dynamics.
In his statement, Okonkwo also called for any party members who feel sidelined or unrecognized by recent developments in Umuahia to put aside their grievances for the sake of the party’s progress. He stressed the importance of supporting the current leadership and the upcoming convention, which will be an opportunity for all members to seek positions and contribute to the party’s future.
“This is our best chance to move past the issues caused by the previous National Working Committee and to create a more inclusive and effective organization,” Okonkwo concluded.
