Edo Election: Ighodalo Warns Against Electing an “Illiterate” Governor

Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the upcoming Edo State governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024, has strongly advised the electorate to be cautious about electing a governor who lacks education and competence.

Speaking at a campaign rally held at Olua Primary School Field in Uselu, Ighodalo’s remarks seemed to address a recent blunder made by the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo.

Ighodalo emphasized that Edo State requires a governor who can ensure both security and youth development. He highlighted the importance of having a leader who is educated and capable, noting that the state’s progress and stability depend on it. “We don’t need an illiterate who will bring insecurity,” Ighodalo declared, stressing that only a well-informed and competent governor can effectively tackle the challenges facing the state.

He promised to harness the creative and innovative potential of Edo’s young people for the benefit of the entire state. Ighodalo believes that with the right leadership, the youth can drive significant positive change and contribute meaningfully to the state’s growth. His commitment to youth development was a central theme of his campaign, as he outlined plans to provide opportunities and support for young residents.

Governor Godwin Obaseki, who will be completing his term in office on November 12, 2024, also addressed the crowd during the rally. He expressed strong confidence in Ighodalo and his running mate, Philip Ogie, asserting that they are well-equipped to continue the progress made during his administration.

Obaseki highlighted the importance of continuity and urged voters to support the PDP to ensure that the development work begun under his leadership is carried forward.

“I have done my best during my time in office,” Obaseki stated. “Ighodalo and Ogie will continue from where I leave off on November 12. We want to see progress and not go backward.” He noted the substantial youth presence at the rally, linking it to the educational institutions in the area, such as the University of Benin and the Benin Technical College. Obaseki emphasized the importance of the upcoming election, urging voters to make a thoughtful choice to maintain the state’s momentum.

He further praised Ighodalo as a candidate who is friendly to youth and possesses the necessary brilliance and capability. “No mistakes on September 21,” Obaseki urged. “The work done in Egor Local Government Area and across the state is too important to let it stop. Make sure you go out early, vote, and protect your votes.”

The PDP rally saw an impressive turnout, particularly from the youth, reflecting strong local support. Party leaders, including the Edo State PDP chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, expressed gratitude to Egor residents for their ongoing support and enthusiasm, underscoring the party’s commitment to continuing the positive trajectory of the state.
