Binance CEO Speaks on Efforts to Free Detained Staff in Nigeria
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on EmailShare on Telegram

In a recent development, Binance CEO Richard Teng has issued a fresh statement regarding the ongoing detention of one of the company’s senior executives, Tigran Gambaryan, in Nigeria.

Gambaryan, who faces accusations of money laundering and tax evasion, has been detained for over seven months in Nigeria. Teng highlighted the efforts his team has been making to secure Gambaryan’s release, emphasizing that this issue remains a top priority for Binance.
Teng made his comments while attending the Token2049 conference in Singapore, where he took the opportunity to shed more light on the challenging situation. He revealed that Binance has been actively appealing to the Nigerian government, repeatedly urging them to release Gambaryan so that he can return to the United States and receive the appropriate medical care for his deteriorating health.
“We have appealed to the Nigerian government repeatedly to release Tigran so that he can go home and get the proper medical treatment that he needs,” Teng stated. “There’s no need to hold our staff. He’s held unjustly and unfairly.”

The CEO went on to express the emotional toll this situation has had, not only on Gambaryan’s family but also on the wider Binance team. “It is distressing for all of us,” Teng said, “especially for the families. For us at Binance, this is a top priority. We have a dedicated task force working around the clock, exploring every possible avenue, from legal measures to political engagement, to ensure Tigran’s safe return.”
Ongoing Legal and Diplomatic Efforts;
According to Teng, Binance’s internal task force has been exploring all potential channels to secure Gambaryan’s release, including leveraging both legal and diplomatic means. He added that Binance is seeking for Gambaryan to be classified as an unlawfully detained individual by the U.S. government. Such a designation, according to Teng, could expedite the extraction process and add more international pressure on Nigerian authorities to release him.
The company has also made appeals on humanitarian grounds, pointing to Gambaryan’s deteriorating health as a key reason for his immediate release. Despite these efforts, the Nigerian government has so far resisted calls to release the executive, citing the ongoing legal proceedings and the seriousness of the charges against him.
Health Concerns and Detention Conditions;
One of the most alarming aspects of Gambaryan’s detention has been the reported decline in his health. Multiple reports indicate that he has contracted pneumonia twice during his imprisonment in Nigeria.

In addition to this, Gambaryan has been dealing with a chronic back condition, a pre-existing medical issue that has worsened due to the conditions of his incarceration. Concerns about his health reached a peak when he collapsed during one of his court appearances, raising alarm about the state of his wellbeing.
While Binance and Gambaryan’s legal team have highlighted these health concerns as part of their plea for his release, Nigerian authorities have downplayed the severity of his condition. Some officials have suggested that Gambaryan’s health issues are being exaggerated to gain sympathy and expedite his release, a claim that Binance firmly disputes.
Background of the Detention;
The events leading up to Gambaryan’s detention in Nigeria date back to February 26, when he and a colleague, Nardeem Anjarwalla, traveled to Nigeria to address compliance issues that had arisen between Binance and Nigerian regulators. Gambaryan was serving as Binance’s head of financial crime compliance at the time, a critical role given the increasing scrutiny that the cryptocurrency exchange has been facing in various jurisdictions around the world.
The meeting between the Binance executives and Nigerian authorities took a sharp turn, resulting in the detention of both Gambaryan and Anjarwalla. While Anjarwalla managed to evade custody using a second passport, Gambaryan was less fortunate.

He was formally charged and eventually sent to Kuje prison, a facility located in the Nigerian capital, Abuja. Since then, Gambaryan has made several court appearances, but the case has dragged on, leading to his prolonged detention.
Gambaryan’s detention in Nigeria is just one of many legal and regulatory battles Binance has faced in recent years. As the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance has attracted the attention of regulators across the globe, particularly in areas related to financial compliance.

Countries such as Brazil, India, the United States, and Nigeria have all raised concerns about the platform’s adherence to local laws, particularly in terms of money laundering prevention and tax compliance.
In response to these challenges, Binance has significantly increased its focus on compliance. The company has doubled its workforce in this area and implemented stricter internal controls to meet the demands of regulatory authorities worldwide. However, as the Gambaryan case demonstrates, the road to full compliance has been a difficult one, with ongoing legal entanglements in various regions.
Nigeria’s Role in the Global Crypto Market;
Nigeria holds a particularly significant place in the global cryptocurrency landscape. According to a report by Chainalysis, the country ranks second in terms of cryptocurrency adoption worldwide. This high level of adoption, combined with a growing interest in blockchain technology, makes Nigeria a key market for Binance and other cryptocurrency exchanges. However, this also means that Nigerian authorities have taken a closer look at the operations of these platforms, ensuring they comply with local regulations.
While Binance remains committed to resolving its compliance issues in Nigeria, the detention of one of its top executives has only served to complicate matters further. With Tigran Gambaryan still behind bars, Binance faces an uphill battle to both secure his release and ensure that its operations in the country align with regulatory expectations.
