CDS Assures Peaceful, Free, and Fair Elections in Edo State

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has announced that the Nigerian Army, in partnership with other security agencies, is dedicated to ensuring a peaceful, fair, and credible governorship election in Edo State on Saturday, September 21. This commitment comes as part of efforts to foster a secure environment for voters and candidates alike.

During a meeting with Governor Godwin Obaseki at the Government House in Benin City, General Musa emphasized the military’s vital role in maintaining order during the election period. He urged political leaders and actors to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions, as a peaceful election is essential for the democratic process.

Musa stated, “I’m here to promote peace. There’s no need for tension during elections; other countries conduct them calmly and allow their citizens to carry on with their daily lives. We aim to ensure that the Edo elections are conducted fairly, allowing everyone to vote for their preferred candidate without fear of intimidation.”

He reassured attendees that the Armed Forces would remain neutral and support a transparent election process. General Musa also praised Governor Obaseki for his administration’s efforts in promoting development and stability within the state, highlighting the importance of collaboration in achieving a peaceful electoral atmosphere.

In response, Governor Obaseki expressed his appreciation for the military’s presence and support in enhancing security across Edo. He noted recent initiatives, such as the establishment of new military operations bases, which have significantly reduced crime rates, particularly in the Benin-Auchi area. Obaseki mentioned plans for additional bases to further strengthen security.

However, the governor raised concerns about some political actors potentially threatening national security. He reported instances of police intimidation, which undermined public trust and confidence in the electoral process. “It is crucial that all citizens feel safe and free to exercise their right to vote. Intimidation from law enforcement is unacceptable and detrimental to democracy,” he emphasized.

Obaseki called for fairness, insisting that all candidates should have equal opportunities to campaign without interference. He criticized the unfair advantages some candidates have had, such as the use of police resources for their campaigns, stressing the need for a level playing field for all participants.

In preparation for the election, the Nigerian Air Force has commenced the transport of election materials for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), ensuring timely delivery for the electoral process.

INEC has also reminded political parties to cease their campaigns as of midnight on September 19, in accordance with the Electoral Act, and instructed that campaign attire not be worn at polling stations on election day.

Additionally, Senator Monday Okpebholo, the APC candidate, pledged to address outstanding salaries for local government workers within his first 100 days if elected, stressing the importance of financial accountability and support for local governance.

The International Press Centre has called on journalists covering the election to prioritize their safety, urging security agencies to protect media personnel. All stakeholders are encouraged to cooperate in ensuring a peaceful and credible election in Edo State.
