Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy and the daughter of Nigerian billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, made a significant mark in history over the weekend. She became the first British Nigerian to host an opening session at the prestigious United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), an achievement that highlights her growing global influence.

DJ Cuppy, a renowned DJ, philanthropist, global music sensation, and founder of the Cuppy Foundation captivated the audience with her charm and energy as she moderated the session titled “The Summit of the Future – Youth Actions Day,” according to a statement from her media office.
This milestone was particularly noteworthy given the tremendous progress DJ Cuppy has achieved since her previous appearance at the United Nations. As a powerful voice for youth empowerment, she kicked off the Youth Action Day at this year’s UNGA with her signature vibrant and engaging style. Her role in the session was not just that of a moderator but of an inspirational figure, electrifying the Assembly with her youthful charisma.
During her keynote address, DJ Cuppy created a remarkable connection with the audience, managing to get the entire Assembly chanting together in unison, which added a dynamic energy to the formal proceedings.

“My name is Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, but you can call me Cuppy. I’m repping a country called Nigeria, in case you’ve heard of it. I’m a DJ, philanthropist, but also your moderator. But it feels like I’m more your co-host, because today is all about you. It’s all about you,” she stated with a smile, addressing the enthusiastic audience.
Emphasizing the importance of youth leadership and participation, she continued, “Now, someone once told me, it’s not about your ‘what,’ but it’s about your ‘why.’ So why are we here? We believe that youth need to be able to take action. We believe in leadership that brings everyone to the table. And that’s why I’m just so proud to be here.”

DJ Cuppy used the opportunity to share her passion for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which promotes quality education for all. She noted, “My favorite Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) is definitely 4: ‘Opportunity for Everyone to Get Quality Education.’ And at my foundation, the Cuppy Foundation, I’m so proud because we provide funds for African students.”
Her address encouraged the attendees to actively participate in the conversation throughout the session, ensuring that their voices were heard in the ongoing dialogue about global challenges. The day culminated in a powerful musical performance by DJ Cuppy, leaving a lasting impression on the audience and reinforcing her ability to seamlessly blend entertainment with activism.

In an unexpected and delightful moment during her opening session, DJ Cuppy hinted at her future aspirations, casually suggesting that she might one day run for the highest office in Nigeria. Her statement, “I might just be Nigeria’s first female president,” sparked excitement among attendees and stirred the imagination of the audience. The bold declaration resonated with the room, bringing an added sense of possibility to the proceedings.
Later in the evening, during the closing session, DJ Cuppy’s earlier comment was playfully addressed by the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed. With a wink and a smile, Amina Mohammed quipped, “You told me you wanted to be Nigeria’s first female president, and what did I say? After me.” This light-hearted exchange between the two trailblazing women evoked laughter from the audience but also carried a powerful message about the rising wave of female leadership in Nigeria and globally.
The moment symbolized more than just a playful banter—it was a representation of the growing momentum behind women’s leadership in Nigeria and across the world. DJ Cuppy’s aspirations, combined with Amina Mohammed’s encouragement, underscored the importance of women stepping into leadership roles and inspired the next generation to aim for the highest levels of influence and power.
The 2024 UNGA Summit of the Future successfully spotlighted the actions necessary to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. With young people forming a significant portion of the global population, their involvement in addressing the world’s challenges is crucial to ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
Beyond her social and philanthropic achievements, DJ Cuppy has a strong academic background that further highlights her versatility. Her academic journey began in 2014 when she earned a degree in business and economics from King’s College, London.

This was followed by a Master’s in Music Business from New York University in 2015, and a second Master’s degree in African Studies in 2022. In March 2023, DJ Cuppy announced that she had completed another Master’s program at the University of Oxford, making it her third postgraduate degree.
Recently, the singer took to social media to share yet another academic endeavor—her pursuit of a fourth degree at the London School of Economics (LSE). This impressive academic journey, coupled with her achievements in entertainment, philanthropy, and global advocacy, positions DJ Cuppy as one of Nigeria’s most dynamic and influential young leaders. Her diverse pursuits reflect a commitment to personal growth, intellectual rigor, and a deep sense of responsibility to the world around her.
In her various roles as a DJ, philanthropist, and academic, DJ Cuppy continues to break barriers and challenge the status quo, proving that young people, particularly women, can lead impactful, multifaceted lives while contributing to meaningful change on a global scale.
