The representative for the Karim-Lamido II constituency in the Taraba State House of Assembly has called on his constituents to avoid actions that could disrupt peace in the region. This appeal follows recent violence that led to significant loss of life and property, raising concerns among residents.
During a community address on Tuesday, the lawmaker warned against cattle rustling and other criminal activities that threaten the harmony of the area. His comments came in response to reports of cattle rustling in the Andami Ward of his constituency, which have sparked fear and unrest among local communities.
Emphasizing the need for peace to foster development, he urged community members to actively protect the tranquility that exists. He stated that maintaining peace is crucial for the progress of the constituency and warned that anyone involved in criminal activities would face serious consequences, including legal action.
In light of the unrest, the lawmaker announced an immediate suspension of market activities in Mashigin Kiriya Village, a community near Plateau State. He explained that this measure is intended to prevent further violence and enhance security in the area, ensuring that residents feel safe in their daily activities.
Captain A.Y. Jarma, representing the security forces, also addressed the community, urging residents to report any suspicious activities to the authorities. He emphasized that security is a shared responsibility and cautioned against aiding bandits by providing food and supplies. Jarma made it clear that the government would not tolerate any threats to the safety of innocent people and their property.
Community leaders who spoke to reporters supported the decision to close the Mashigin Kiriya market, believing it is necessary to restore peace in the region. They urged residents to come together and cooperate with security forces to maintain stability.
The situation remains tense, but local leaders and lawmakers are hopeful that with community cooperation and commitment to peace, the area can recover from recent disturbances and move towards a more secure future.
They reiterated that fostering a culture of peace is essential for the well-being and development of all residents in the Karim-Lamido II constituency.
