Grammy-Winning Artist Burna Boy Reveals the ‘True OGs’ Behind His Journey to Stardom

Grammy Award-winning vocalist, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, more commonly known as Burna Boy, has expressed his deep respect for 2Baba, Timaya, D’banj, Larry Gaaga, and Wande Coal, regarding them as the sole veterans in the Nigerian music industry whom he holds in high esteem.
During a recent Instagram live session, the self-proclaimed ‘African Giant’ shared how each of the aforementioned artists has profoundly influenced his life and career.

Burna Boy reminisced about a visit to Timaya’s abode around 2012 or 2013, where he was greatly inspired by the artist’s accomplishments and was advised to aspire to reach similar heights of success. He also acknowledged that D’banj graciously covered the expenses for one of his music videos, and 2Baba extended a collaboration opportunity to him without any apparent obligation.

The ‘Last Last’ Crooner also lauded Larry Gaaga for his genuineness and unwavering commitment to authentic artistry, opting to stay true to his craft rather than conforming to industry norms. In his own words: “The only esteemed individuals who have influenced my life are Timaya, primarily for demonstrating that achieving stardom is attainable. I will hold him in high regard for eternity. D’banj also supported me in the past by funding the ‘Wan Da Mo’ music video. These are two individuals I deeply respect. It’s not that others lack respect; it’s just that they have faced numerous challenges, and we only remember those who were there during the dark times. People like Larry Gaaga. He stood by me during those times.

These are individuals I will honor for the rest of my days. When discussing esteemed figures, in my view, those names are the only ones, along with 2Face due to his musical prowess and willingness to collaborate with me when he didn’t have to in the past. These are the esteemed individuals to me. Anyone else does not hold that status for me. ID Cabasa, you may be considered an esteemed figure by Olamide, but not by me. We have all faced unique challenges, and we all perceive life differently. I cannot overlook Wande Coal either. We were very close at one point in time.”
