In Benin City, tensions is escalating at the Edo State Government House amid allegations regarding Philip Shaibu’s possible return as Deputy Governor.

This situation has led to increased security measures around the Government House, located on Osadebe Avenue, as authorities work to prevent Shaibu from resuming his position.

Reports indicate that the state government has banned all vehicles, including those belonging to staff, from entering Osadebe Avenue.

This move has caused significant disruption, with many visitors and civil servants forced to park on the roadside and walk long distances to reach their offices.

Observers noted the presence of police and state constabulary officers stationed at roadblocks near the entrance, further intensifying the atmosphere of uncertainty.

The backdrop to this standoff involves a Federal High Court ruling on July 17, which reinstated Shaibu as Deputy Governor. This decision followed his impeachment by the State House of Assembly on March 18, 2024.

In the wake of his removal, Governor Godwin Obaseki appointed Engineer Godwin Marvellous Omobayo as the new Deputy Governor.

However, the court’s ruling has raised questions about the legitimacy of this appointment and the ongoing power struggle within the state government.

Civil servants in the area expressed their surprise at the heightened security measures, with many commenting on the unexpected tension. “We expected a more peaceful environment after the elections, but this situation is quite alarming,” one civil servant noted, highlighting the growing frustration among workers.

The Edo State Government issued a statement on Sunday, alleging that Shaibu had plans to forcibly enter the Government House to assert his purported reinstatement.

This claim came despite an ongoing appeal against the court’s decision, which has left the situation hanging in a precarious balance.

Mr. Crusoe Osagie, a special adviser to the governor, called on the Inspector General of Police to intervene, warning that any attempt by Shaibu to enter the Government House could lead to chaos.

Osagie recalled a previous incident where violence erupted, resulting in the death of a police officer during a similar confrontation.

He emphasized the need for vigilance to prevent further tragedies, stating, “The ambition of one man should not bring the state to anarchy.”

In contrast, Shaibu has denied all allegations, insisting that the accusations are unfounded and part of a campaign to undermine his credibility.

His media aide asserted that Shaibu is committed to maintaining peace and following the rule of law.

“Unlike Governor Obaseki, who has failed to recognize the will of the people, Philip Shaibu is a peace-loving individual who does not seek conflict,” the aide stated.

As the situation continues to develop, the citizens of Edo State are left watching closely, hoping for a resolution that restores stability to their government.
