Rivers LG Election: Rivers Electoral Commission Disputes INEC Claims Over Voter Registration Data
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on EmailShare on Telegram

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has publicly refuted claims made by the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the availability of Voter Registration data.

During a press briefing held in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Johnson Alalibo, the INEC REC in Rivers, asserted that RSIEC had applied for the Voter Registration Manifest, but it had not yet been released due to what he termed “administrative reasons.”

In response to these allegations, RSIEC has clarified that it received the Voter Registration Manifest from INEC as far back as November 2023. This information was shared by Tobin Tamunotonye, the RSIEC Commissioner for Public Affairs and Civic Education, during an interview.

Tamunotonye emphasized that there has been a misunderstanding regarding the status of the voter registration data, which he insists is crucial for the upcoming election.

Tamunotonye elaborated on the importance of the Voter Registration Manifest for ensuring that elections are conducted fairly and transparently.

He explained that the commission has been diligently preparing for the elections and has been following legal protocols throughout the process.

The misunderstanding about the data release could potentially affect public confidence in the electoral process, and RSIEC is committed to maintaining transparency.

Moreover, Tamunotonye addressed a recent court ruling concerning the voter registration details, which instructed RSIEC to utilize the 2023 voter registration data for the elections.

He reassured the public that the commission is strictly adhering to the law and is fully prepared to conduct the elections without any hindrance.

The court’s directive further solidifies RSIEC’s position and underscores the legal framework guiding operations.

The integrity of the electoral process is vital for any democracy, and RSIEC recognizes the significance of having accurate voter registration data.

Tamunotonye urged citizens to remain engaged and informed about the electoral process, assuring them that the commission is committed to conducting free and fair election.

He also encouraged the public to participate actively in the electoral process, emphasizing that every vote counts.

In light of these developments, RSIEC is focused on ensuring that all necessary preparations are made in time for the election.

The commission is working closely with various stakeholders to guarantee that the electoral process is smooth and efficient.

By addressing the issues surrounding voter registration and compliance with legal rulings, RSIEC aims to enhance public trust in the electoral system.

As the elections approach, the commission remains vigilant, aiming to provide a transparent and fair electoral environment for all participants.

The RSIEC’s commitment to clarity and adherence to legal requirements stand as a crucial pillar for fostering democracy in Rivers State.

With these assurances, RSIEC hope to alleviate any concerns among the electorate and to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted without any issues.
