Insecurity in North-West: Kaduna Governor Advocates Joint Military Effort in Combating Banditry and Terrorism

In a recent development highlighting the urgent need for a collaborative response to growing insecurity in Nigeria’s North-West region, Kaduna State Governor Senator Uba Sani has made a compelling call for a unified military effort to address the alarming rise in banditry and terrorism. This appeal comes in the wake of a courtesy visit from Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, which underscored the pressing security challenges facing the area.

During the meeting, Governor Sani articulated the critical need for a cooperative framework among Northern States to effectively combat the escalating threat posed by criminal elements. He lauded the Federal Government for its initiative in establishing the Joint Military Command and launching Operation Fansan Yamma, describing these efforts as a significant commitment to confronting the multifaceted security issues in the region. “The establishment of the Joint Military Command is a clear demonstration of commitment to tackling insecurity,” he remarked, emphasizing the necessity of a collective response.

The primary objective of Defence Minister Abubakar’s visit was to finalize preparations for the upcoming launch of Operation Fansan Yamma, a strategic military operation aimed at quelling insecurity throughout the North-West. During his discussions, Abubakar commended the administration of Kaduna State for its unwavering support for security agencies and the ongoing infrastructure projects, particularly the construction of roads that facilitate access to remote and hard-to-reach areas.

In his address, Governor Sani highlighted that while military intervention is crucial, it is equally important to address the underlying causes of insecurity. He advocated for a comprehensive approach that includes substantial investments in agriculture, infrastructure, education, and healthcare. Additionally, he emphasized the necessity of engaging citizens in the development process, advocating for a people-driven, inclusive Marshall Plan that would foster regional development and promote transparent governance through the North-West Development Commission.

The Governor did not shy away from making specific requests during the meeting. He urged Defence Minister Abubakar to consider the integration of Operation Safe Haven under the command of the 1 Division, Nigerian Army, based in Kaduna. This integration is seen as a way to bolster security coordination and enhance the effectiveness of military operations in the region.

Responding to these requests, the Defence Minister assured the Governor of the Federal Government’s commitment to providing necessary support to ensure the success of these operations. He expressed gratitude to the troops stationed in the region for their dedication and patriotic service during his visits to the 1 Division Nigerian Army, Air Training Command, and various frontline local governments.

With the impending launch of Operation Fansan Yamma, there is a palpable sense of optimism among local leaders and citizens alike. The joint military effort is expected to decisively address the myriad challenges of insecurity that have plagued the North-West Zone. This operation is not merely a military endeavor; it represents a crucial step toward restoring peace and stability in a region that has suffered significantly due to violence and lawlessness.

The call for a unified military strategy reflects a broader recognition that tackling insecurity in the North-West requires not just military might but also a multifaceted approach that addresses economic and social factors. As Governor Sani aptly pointed out, “Investment in agriculture and infrastructure is key to creating opportunities and reducing the allure of banditry and terrorism.”

As the situation unfolds with the launch of Operation Fansan Yamma, the collaboration between state and federal authorities may mark a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity. The hope is that through joint efforts, comprehensive planning, and sustained investment in development, the North-West region can emerge from the shadows of violence and pave the way toward a more secure and prosperous future. The collective resolve demonstrated by leaders like Governor Sani and Defence Minister Abubakar will be crucial in determining the effectiveness of this military initiative and its impact on the lives of the citizens in the North-West.
