Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has directed the immediate ban of heavy-duty trucks from using the Olaiya Bridge in Osogbo due to safety concerns. The directive was issued following technical reports on the structural condition of the bridge.
In a statement released on Monday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor emphasised that the decision is aimed at preventing potential collapse and ensuring public safety. Adeleke had presided over a security council meeting earlier in Osogbo, where the issue was discussed.
“The decision became necessary to protect the bridge from possible collapse and to prevent any untoward incidents caused by the continuous passage of heavy trucks,” the statement read. The governor described the move as a precautionary step and instructed the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to erect barricades, allowing only cars and buses to pass.
Governor Adeleke also mandated the Ministry to issue a travel advisory, supported by public announcements and radio jingles, to inform citizens and transport operators about the new regulations.
He assured the public that the directive was in the best interest of the state and that a thorough assessment of the bridge’s condition would be carried out to determine the next steps for its preservation.
