The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into Alex Ikwechegh, a lawmaker representing Aba South/Aba North Federal Constituency, over his alleged assault on an Uber driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, in Abuja.
The incident reportedly took place when Abuwatseya delivered a package to Ikwechegh’s residence, with a video of the encounter going viral and prompting widespread public condemnation. Following his arrest and police questioning, Ikwechegh apologised publicly, acknowledging his actions and the harm they caused.
At Tuesday’s plenary, House Majority Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere moved for an independent probe into Ikwechegh’s conduct, stressing the importance of maintaining the House’s integrity. Ihonvbere noted that the behaviour of members directly impacts the public’s perception of the legislative body, and he expressed disappointment in Ikwechegh’s actions, which he said undermined the House’s collective image and reputation.
In response, Ikorodu Representative Babajimi Benson emphasized that lawmakers must treat citizens with dignity and respect at all times. Benson observed that the Nigerian parliament often faces public criticism, which incidents like this can exacerbate. He urged members to avoid any behaviour that might be seen as lording authority over ordinary Nigerians, highlighting the need for legislators to remember their duty as servants of the people.
Ikwechegh addressed his colleagues, explaining that his actions were taken “in the heat of the moment” and admitting they fell short of expected standards. He expressed regret for the embarrassment caused to Abuwatseya, his constituents, and the House, pledging full cooperation with the police investigation. He further committed to professional counselling and community service initiatives aimed at promoting empathy and respect.
Meanwhile, activist Deji Adeyanju filed a petition with Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, urging an investigation into Ikwechegh’s alleged threats and assault. Adeyanju described Ikwechegh’s actions as “distasteful” and called for an inquiry into potential abuse of power, citing risks to public safety.
