Nigerian international, Calvin Bassey, has revealed that a memorable Lionel Messi goal inspired his decision to represent Nigeria rather than England. In an interview with Sky Sports, the Fulham defender recounted watching Nigeria’s 2018 World Cup match against Argentina, where Messi scored an unforgettable goal that left a lasting impression.
“Messi is Messi,” Bassey said, describing Messi’s skilful goal involving a knee touch, left foot, and right-footed finish that captivated fans worldwide. Despite Nigeria’s 2-1 loss, the game solidified Bassey’s dream of playing for Nigeria on the world stage.
Born in Italy to Nigerian parents and raised in Newham, England, Bassey had the option to represent England or Nigeria, but in 2021, he committed to the Super Eagles, making his debut in a 0-0 draw against Ghana during the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. Recalling Nigeria’s spirited effort against Argentina, Bassey admired the team’s resilience, even as they narrowly missed advancing to the knockout stages. He shared, “Though Nigeria lost, the way they went down won my heart.”
Since his debut, Bassey has become an essential part of the Super Eagles squad, contributing to their AFCON journey, where they finished as runners-up earlier this year. With 28 appearances to his name, Bassey continues to proudly represent the 2013 AFCON champions on the international stage.
