NDDC Begins Channelization of Creek in Bayelsa, Rivers

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has initiated the channelization of Kolo Creek, covering 17 communities from Okarki-Otuogidi to Ogbia communities in Bayelsa and Rivers state. This project aims to alleviate flooding risks and ease the impact on communities along the Ahoada axis of the East-West Road. NDDC Managing Director, Samuel Ogbuku, made this announcement during a ground-breaking event in Okarki, Ahoada West Local Government Area, Rivers State.

According to a statement from the NDDC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thompson-Wakama, the channelization will enhance commercial activities, support aquatic life, and lower the risk of water-borne diseases. Ogbuku emphasized that despite the project’s high cost, its benefits to the local communities will be substantial, assuring that the NDDC is committed to completing it on time.

This initiative follows appeals from community leaders for urgent action to clear creek blockages threatening the area. NDDC’s Executive Director of Projects, Sir Victor Antai, hailed the project as a milestone for the current Commission management, adding that it reflects the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

In recognition of these efforts, the Traditional Ruler of Okarki, King Elijah Harry Aduan, awarded a chieftaincy title to the NDDC Managing Director, naming him “Itonji Oka-Akie I” (light of the people) of Okarki Kingdom. Aduan praised the Commission for taking significant steps to restore water flow and support local economic activities.

Meanwhile, the NDDC has also inspected an emergency shelter in Otuokpoti community, Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa, aimed at mitigating the impacts of annual flooding.

Ogbuku explained that these emergency shelters, currently under construction in Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers state, will be equipped with schools, hospitals, police posts, and recreation centers.
Each of the six shelters, designed to accommodate over 1,000 people, will serve as temporary housing during flood emergencies, offering essential services to support affected communities.
