In a bid to combat open defecation and improve public sanitation, the Kwara State government has commenced the construction of public toilets in various locations across Ilorin, the state capital. The initiative targets high-traffic areas such as Eruda, Balogun Alanamu, and Abata Asunkere communities, which have been identified as hotspots for open defecation.
During an inspection of the ongoing construction, Hon. Usman Lade, the Commissioner for Water Resources, stressed the importance of maintaining high standards in the project. He instructed the contractors to follow the agreed-upon specifications and complete the work within the stipulated timeline. After identifying some issues during the inspection, Lade directed that necessary corrections should be made to ensure the facilities meet the required quality.
This initiative is part of the state’s comprehensive effort to eliminate open defecation in Ilorin and across Kwara. Lade highlighted the severe health hazards associated with open defecation, such as the transmission of diseases, and emphasized that providing functional sanitation infrastructure is key to improving public health and hygiene.
As the project progresses, the commissioner urged the local communities to take ownership of the facilities, ensuring they are used and maintained properly once completed. Lade emphasized that the success of the initiative hinges not only on the construction of these toilets but also on the cooperation of residents in maintaining cleanliness and proper usage.
