A Kaduna High Court on Tuesday ordered the remand of two brothers, Hamza Jibrin, 27, and Yusuf Jibrin, 24, in a correctional facility for their alleged involvement in culpable homicide and armed robbery. The police charged the brothers with conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide related to an incident on November 7 along Airport Road, Kaduna.
Justice Aisha Shagari presided over the case and ordered the defendants to be remanded following their plea of not guilty. The judge scheduled the next hearing for December 12 to further deliberate on the charges against them.
Prosecutor James Edward informed the court that the defendants, along with two other suspects who are still at large, attacked a 26-year-old man, Rabiu Sani, with machetes and other dangerous weapons. The attack resulted in Sani’s death, after which the defendants allegedly stole his HP laptop, two cell phones, his wallet containing two ATM cards, and a cash sum of N30,000.
Edward highlighted that the charges against the defendants are serious offenses under the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act LFN, 2004. He emphasized that the nature of the crime warranted their continued detention until the hearing.
During the session, the defense counsel, Habiba Usman, appealed to the court to grant her clients bail. Usman argued that the brothers would comply with bail conditions and assured the court of their good behavior, emphasizing that they had no intention of fleeing.
Despite the defense’s request, the court opted to remand the defendants, citing the severity of the alleged offenses. The judge set the adjournment date for further hearing on the case, leaving the bail application pending for consideration in the next session.
