From Mechanic to Boxing Champion: The Inspiring Journey of Lekan ‘The Engine’ Muibi
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on EmailShare on Telegram

Lekan ‘The Engine’ Muibi’s rise from the dusty streets of Ibafo, Ogun State, to becoming Nigeria’s National Light Heavyweight Champion is a story of grit, resilience, and unwavering determination. Muibi, who once toiled as an apprentice mechanic, could have easily chosen a different path. Instead, he fought through adversity, defying the odds to make a name for himself in the boxing ring.

Muibi’s love for boxing was sparked at a young age. Growing up in Ibafo, he was drawn to the sport by his older brother, Olatunde, who introduced him to a local boxing gym in Abeokuta. At just nine years old, Muibi moved to Mafoluku in Lagos, where he began training seriously, despite the initial rejections from coaches who doubted his potential. His raw talent shone through when he defeated a sparring partner three years his senior in his first match at the Butch Gym Arena. The spectators were amazed by his fearless style and powerful punches, heralding the arrival of a future star.

Juggling his boxing aspirations with his apprenticeship as a mechanic, Muibi earned the nickname ‘The Engine,’ a nod to his strength, work ethic, and the mechanical skills he honed in the workshop. Despite the challenges, he remained focused, determined to prove his worth in the boxing world. His breakthrough came in 2018 when he emerged as the best boxer at the Gift Cole amateur boxing contest in Lekki, Lagos, defeating several opponents with knockout victories. This victory marked a turning point in his career, earning him a cash prize and a brand new Toyota Corolla, signaling his arrival on the national stage.

However, Muibi’s journey was far from smooth. In the early stages of his career, financial difficulties almost forced him to quit boxing. He struggled to afford proper training gear and often had to walk long distances to attend practice sessions. It was the support of his mother and coach, Confidence, that kept him going. Confidence, who recognized Muibi’s potential early on, provided him with the necessary support and mentorship, helping him to stay focused on his dream despite the hardships.

Muibi’s tenacity paid off when he made his professional debut on January 14, 2022, against Raji Babawale at the Yucateco Arena in Ikorodu. His victory marked the beginning of an unbeaten streak, with Muibi winning 14 consecutive fights by knockout. He went on to defeat notable opponents like Femi Gbenga, Idowu Rasheed, and Sunday Ajuwa, showcasing his power and skill in the ring.

The young champion draws inspiration from boxing legends like Mike Tyson and Anthony Joshua. He spends hours studying their techniques on YouTube, analyzing their footwork, power, and strategic thinking. Muibi has been particularly influenced by Joshua’s story, seeing a reflection of his own journey in the British-Nigerian boxer’s rise to fame. He dreams of one day sparring with Joshua, believing there is much he can learn from the heavyweight superstar.

As Muibi prepares for his next fight on December 26, aiming for the vacant WBA Africa light heavyweight title, he remains focused on extending his unbeaten run. With rigorous training and a steely resolve, he is determined to continue his winning streak and make his mark on the international boxing stage.

From a young mechanic with dreams of stardom to a national champion, Muibi’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance. His story serves as an inspiration to many, proving that with hard work and determination, it is possible to rise from humble beginnings to achieve greatness. The upcoming Boxing Day fight promises to be another thrilling chapter in Muibi’s incredible journey, as he aims to solidify his status as one of Nigeria’s most promising boxing talents.
