Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially signed the Lagos Electricity Bill 2024 into law. A move aimed at addressing ongoing energy challenges in the state. The bill, signed on Tuesday at the Lagos House in Ikeja, is expected to lay the foundation for robust economic and industrial growth by ensuring reliable power supply across the state.
In a statement released by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, it was noted that the law aligns with the Federal Government’s 2023 approval granting states the authority to generate and distribute electricity. Sanwo-Olu emphasized that this bill is a crucial step toward achieving 24-hour electricity availability across Lagos, reinforcing the state’s ambition to become a global city with uninterrupted power.
The governor also highlighted the importance of this initiative in transforming the state’s infrastructure and attracting investment. Last month, the Lagos State Government had called on independent power producers and energy firms to submit proposals for building gas-fired power plants to address the city’s long-standing electricity supply gap. This initiative is part of the Clean Lagos Electricity Market, a collaboration between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Office of Public-Private Partnerships.
With this law in place, the state is now poised to make significant strides in its energy sector, attracting investments that will help meet the growing electricity demands of Lagos residents and businesses.
