German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has arrived in Nigeria for a three-day official visit, which will run until December 12, 2024. The visit, aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries, was announced by the German Embassy in Abuja on Monday. Steinmeier’s trip is set to focus on expanding cooperation in trade, culture, and urban development.
During his stay in the Nigerian capital, President Steinmeier will engage with key government officials, including President Bola Tinubu. The two leaders are expected to discuss bilateral relations and areas of mutual interest, particularly in trade and regional stability. Steinmeier will also meet with Dr. Alieu Touray, President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, to explore opportunities for collaboration in West Africa.
After his time in Abuja, Steinmeier will travel to Lagos, where he will meet with business leaders and visit a local start-up hub. The visit underscores Germany’s growing interest in Nigeria’s burgeoning tech sector, with German companies increasingly looking to invest in the Nigerian market. The president is also scheduled to tour the city, examining challenges and opportunities in one of Africa’s largest urban centres.
Steinmeier’s visit to Lagos will also include cultural engagements. He will meet with prominent Nigerian figures, including renowned artist Dr. Nike Okundaye and Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka. These meetings highlight the importance of cultural exchange between Germany and Nigeria, with both countries seeking to enhance their artistic and educational collaboration.
This visit is an important step in strengthening the relationship between Germany and Nigeria. President Steinmeier’s meetings and activities highlight key areas for future cooperation, particularly in trade, culture, and development.
