The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to media freedom while urging journalists to exercise their rights responsibly. During a media event in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, highlighted the press’s vital role in democracy and its responsibility in ensuring accountability.
At the 2024 Annual General Congress of the International Press Institute Nigeria, Minister Idris acknowledged the Nigerian media’s historic contributions, particularly its role in advocating for independence and resisting military rule. He commended the press for being one of the most fearless institutions globally, stressing that its efforts had been pivotal in shaping the nation’s democracy.
The conference, themed “Democracy, Media Freedom, and the Imperative of Protecting Nigeria’s Civic Space,” brought together media professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the balance between press freedom and responsibility. Minister Idris emphasized the importance of journalists using their influence wisely, urging them to maintain a balance between their watchdog role and professionalism.
Idris also referenced President Bola Tinubu’s legacy as a media entrepreneur and democracy advocate, noting his administration’s commitment to safeguarding press freedom since taking office in August 2023. He linked media freedom to the success of Nigeria’s broader reforms, particularly under the Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims at driving growth and sustainability in various sectors.
The minister called on journalists to support the government’s efforts in redirecting funds from wasteful subsidies to vital areas such as infrastructure, education, and social investments, reinforcing the need for responsible media participation in national development.
