The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has applauded the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) for the seamless and peaceful conduct of their recent elections. In a statement issued by his media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim, the minister congratulated re-elected IPI Nigeria President Muskilu Mojeed and Secretary Ahmed Shekarau, along with other returning officers.
Minister Idris also commended the NUJ’s smooth leadership transition, which saw Malam Alhassan Yahaya emerge as President and Abimbola Oyetunde become the union’s first female Deputy National President. He described their election as a reflection of the NUJ’s inclusivity and its evolving leadership dynamics.
The minister urged the two organizations to prioritize ethical journalism, emphasizing the need for integrity and accountability in their work. “As defenders of truth, the media must uphold the highest standards of professionalism for the benefit of our democracy,” Idris said.
He further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting press freedom and providing a conducive environment for free and responsible journalism. “We will continue to safeguard the rights of the press while encouraging it to operate within ethical boundaries,” he added.
The International Press Institute (IPI), a global network of media professionals, works to promote independent journalism and media pluralism worldwide, while the NUJ remains one of Nigeria’s leading professional journalism bodies.
