The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police Force have joined forces to address traffic congestion on the Niger bridges connecting Asaba in Delta State and Onitsha in Anambra State during the festive period. This partnership aims to ensure smooth vehicular movement and improve road safety as travel increases.
According to a statement by FRSC Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the initiative stems from strategic discussions between the Anambra Sector Commander, Joyce Alexander, and the Police Commissioners of Anambra and Delta States. Measures include removing checkpoints on the Old Niger Bridge from December 18, 2024, to January 10, 2025, and deploying mobile surveillance teams at the Second Niger Bridge axis.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed commended the collaboration, highlighting its importance in ensuring safety and reducing congestion for commuters. He urged motorists to cooperate with traffic officials and adhere to safety regulations during the festive season.
Additionally, checkpoints on the Delta side of the Old Niger Bridge will be dismantled to allow free traffic flow. Joint traffic control teams comprising FRSC and police officers will be deployed to monitor and manage traffic throughout the yuletide period.
