The House of Representatives has announced plans to present the sum of N704.91 million to President Bola Tinubu on December 31, 2024. This amount, deducted as 50% of members’ salaries over six months, is intended to support vulnerable Nigerians impacted by the removal of the petrol subsidy.
The initiative stems from a motion moved by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu in July, where he urged members to make the temporary sacrifice to alleviate hunger and hardships among citizens. Speaking on the matter, Kalu stated, “This government is doing its best, but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I want to plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50 per cent for a period of six months.”
During Thursday’s plenary, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas reflected on the decision, noting its significance. “If you recall, about five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to address the critical needs of the Nigerian people. I am happy to inform you that so far, we have contributed N704,907,578.82,” he said.
Abbas added that the funds would be handed over to the President for exclusive use in addressing the needs of vulnerable Nigerians. “The contributions you made highlight the steadfastness and dedication of members to addressing the critical needs of Nigerians,” he remarked.
