Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has criticized ex-Labor Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for allegedly politicizing recent stampedes that claimed dozens of lives in Anambra, Abuja, and Ibadan. Omokri accused Obi of using the tragedies to attack the federal government rather than empathizing with victims’ families.
On his X handle, Obi described the deaths as “heart-wrenching” and attributed them to systemic failures in the country. He called for decisive leadership to address poverty, inequality, and safety standards at public events. However, Omokri condemned Obi’s remarks, labeling them uncharitable and hypocritical, particularly given Obi’s own history as governor of Anambra State.
Omokri referenced a 2013 stampede in Anambra during Obi’s tenure, where 28 people died, alleging Obi’s direct involvement in triggering the incident. He accused Obi of exploiting the current tragedies to score political points and failing to provide concrete solutions to national issues.
“Genuine opposition politics involves providing alternative solutions, not waiting for tragedies to occur to exploit them. This is wickedness, not politics,” Omokri said, adding that Obi’s administration in Anambra saw poverty levels rise significantly.
In response to the backlash, Obi adjusted his earlier statement, emphasizing his commiseration with affected families and appreciation for palliative distribution efforts. He reiterated his concerns about economic hardships driving citizens to desperate measures, describing the events as a “reflection of systemic failures” and calling for better crowd control and equitable resource distribution.
