The Bauchi State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has achieved significant milestones in its fight against drug abuse and trafficking throughout 2024. Over the past year, the agency arrested 415 suspects and confiscated 1.2 tonnes of various illicit substances, including cannabis sativa, diazepam, tramadol, methamphetamine, exol-5, pentazocine, and Rohypnol.
During a press briefing in Bauchi, the State Commander, CN Ali Aminu, provided a detailed review of the agency’s operations. He revealed that 70 cases were brought before the courts, resulting in 84 convictions. However, 18 cases are still pending at the Federal High Court in Bauchi, reflecting the ongoing efforts to address drug-related crimes.
In addition to enforcement, the Command prioritized rehabilitation and support for drug users. A total of 137 individuals underwent counselling and rehabilitation programs, with most receiving brief interventions at the NDLEA’s facility in Bauchi. These efforts are part of the agency’s broader strategy to address the demand for drugs alongside cracking down on supply.
Commander Aminu also issued a stern warning to drug traffickers and users, emphasising the NDLEA’s zero-tolerance approach. He assured that offenders would face the full weight of the law while reiterating the agency’s commitment to creating a drug-free society.
The Commander expressed gratitude to NDLEA Chairman Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) for his visionary leadership in strengthening the agency. He noted that the improved resources and support under Marwa’s administration have been instrumental in achieving the Command’s 2024 successes.
