Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has inaugurated a 10-member committee to oversee the distribution of relief funds for victims of the tragic Bodija explosion that occurred on January 16, 2024. The explosion, which took place on Dejo Oyelese Street in Bodija, Ibadan, claimed several lives and left many injured, prompting a swift response from the state government.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Ibadan, Makinde emphasized the importance of transparency in managing the funds. “This relief fund is to support those who lost property in the explosion. It is not compensation but a commitment to assist the affected individuals and ensure the right thing is done,” he said. The governor also announced plans to repair the road leading to the affected area and erect a monument in memory of the victims.
The committee, chaired by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, includes representatives from professional bodies such as the Nigerian Bar Association, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, and the Nigerian Society of Engineers. Notable members include Iyiola Oladokun, a former deputy governor, and Muyiwa Bamgbose, Chairman of the Bodija Estate Residents Association. Their diverse expertise is expected to ensure efficient fund management and allocation.
Makinde expressed gratitude to organizations and professionals who assisted in the aftermath of the explosion. He reassured residents that the committee would incorporate individuals capable of effectively managing resources to benefit the victims. “We remain committed to rebuilding and supporting the affected community,” he added.
The ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries, including former Deputy Governor Hamid Gbadamosi, Mutiat Ladoja, and Monsurat Sumonu, among others.
