Real Madrid has intensified its interest in Liverpool’s star defender Trent Alexander-Arnold as his contract approaches expiration this summer. While no formal offer has been made, reports suggest the Spanish giants have already reached out, signaling their intent to secure the England international’s services.
From midnight on January 1, Real Madrid will be legally allowed to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with Alexander-Arnold. However, Liverpool remains firm in its stance, rejecting initial overtures and prioritizing their Premier League title chase.
The 26-year-old has reportedly expressed a desire to join Madrid, according to Spanish media. Despite this, Liverpool’s management is engaged in ongoing contract discussions with Alexander-Arnold, alongside fellow stars Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, whose contracts also expire this summer.
Speaking on the matter, Alexander-Arnold maintained a diplomatic tone in December, stating, “I’ve signed multiple contract extensions with Liverpool, and none of those have played out publicly. This one won’t either.”
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher weighed in, describing Alexander-Arnold’s situation as unique compared to Salah and Van Dijk. “Trent is a local lad who has been with Liverpool since childhood. The decision to leave isn’t just professional; it’s deeply personal. Playing for Real Madrid or Barcelona is a dream for many, but leaving your boyhood club is another matter entirely,” Carragher said.
Carragher also highlighted the allure of Real Madrid and Barcelona for top players globally. “It’s rare for players, especially those regarded as the best, to turn down these clubs. However, Trent’s deep ties to Liverpool make this decision far more complex.”
Liverpool faces a critical period as they strive to balance contract negotiations with their ambitions for the Premier League and Champions League. Whether Alexander-Arnold remains at Anfield or succumbs to Madrid’s lure will be one of the key narratives of the transfer window.
