The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has received commendations from Journalists Against Corruption (JAC) for its bold decision to dismiss 27 officials over allegations of fraud and misconduct. This decisive action, according to JAC, signifies a renewed commitment to accountability within the anti-corruption agency.
In a statement released in Abuja, the Project Coordinator of JAC, Kehinde Osifisan, described the mass dismissal as a groundbreaking step in the commission’s history since its establishment in 2002. He noted that this is the first instance of such a large-scale disciplinary action, emphasizing the leadership’s determination to eliminate unethical practices from within the organization.
Osifisan praised the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, for his leadership and resolve to maintain integrity within the agency. He expressed hope that this action would deter other officials from engaging in misconduct, urging all EFCC personnel to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
JAC further encouraged the commission to remain steadfast in its reforms and reminded its officials to maintain exemplary conduct, likening them to Caesar’s wife, who must be above suspicion. This proactive approach, they noted, is crucial for restoring public confidence in the institution tasked with fighting corruption.
The group also called on other institutions to adopt similar measures in addressing internal corruption, emphasizing that such actions are vital for building a transparent and accountable public sector in Nigeria.
