The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has appointed Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo, bringing an end to the succession process following the demise of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III. This announcement was made on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade.
According to Oyelade, Owoade’s appointment followed extensive consultations and traditional divinations conducted by the Oyomesi, the kingmakers of the Oyo Kingdom. He stated, “Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade, after thorough consultations and divinations, has been recommended by the Oyomesi and approved by Governor Seyi Makinde as the new Alaafin of Oyo.”
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo, highlighted the significance of the appointment in resolving the socio-legal disputes that arose after the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III on April 22, 2022. He called on the people of Oyo to embrace the new Alaafin and support his reign.
“This decision has put to rest all the socio-legal controversies that have arisen since the transition of the late Oba Adeyemi. We urge the people of Oyo State to support the new Alaafin and join the government in celebrating this historic moment,” Ojo stated.
The state government expressed confidence that Prince Owoade’s reign would usher in a new era of peace, unity, and prosperity for the Oyo Kingdom. The appointment has been widely regarded as a significant milestone in maintaining the kingdom’s rich cultural heritage and leadership continuity. Governor Makinde called on the people of Oyo State to rally around the new monarch and work together to foster progress in the region.
