President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has joined Nigerians in mourning the death of Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives. Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency in Ogun State, passed away on January 15, 2025, after a brief illness. Her passing has left a void in Nigeria’s political and legislative landscape.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the late legislator as a passionate advocate for national development and a role model for women in politics. He commended her for her unwavering dedication to serving her constituents and her relentless efforts to build a better Nigeria. “She never stopped serving her constituency, and her passion for building a better Nigeria will remain unforgettable,” the President stated.

Hon. Onanuga made significant contributions to legislative processes during her tenure, serving as the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in the 9th Assembly. Her leadership and advocacy for gender equity earned her widespread respect. Rising to the position of Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly, she continued to push for reforms and championed the rights of women and underserved communities.

President Tinubu highlighted her exemplary leadership and commitment to justice, describing her as a trailblazer in Nigerian politics. He emphasized that her life’s work would serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for women aspiring to leadership roles across the nation. Her legacy, he noted, was not only in her achievements but also in the lives she impacted during her service.

The President extended his condolences to her family, the people of Ogun State, and her constituents in Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North. He prayed for divine comfort for all those grieving her loss and urged the nation to honor her memory by continuing her advocacy for justice and equity.
