The National Assembly has rescheduled its resumption date from Tuesday, January 28, 2025, to Tuesday, February 4, 2025, to accommodate ongoing budget defence activities. This was disclosed in separate statements issued by the Clerks of the Senate and the House of Representatives in Abuja.
In an internal memo addressed to all Senators, the Clerk to the Senate, Andrew Nwoba, cited the need for additional time to finalize budget engagements with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). The memo, dated January 24, 2025, reads: “Please be informed that there is a change in the resumption date due to the ongoing budget defence. It has been rescheduled from Tuesday, 28th January 2025, to Tuesday, 4th February 2025, at 11:00 am prompt.”
Similarly, the House of Representatives, through its Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., confirmed the postponement in a statement titled “House of Representatives Postpones Resumption of Plenary to Tuesday, February 4, 2025.” The statement noted that the decision was made to ensure Committees have sufficient time to thoroughly review budget proposals and defence sessions.
The Clerk of the House of Representatives, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, Esq., issued an internal memo on the directive of the House leadership, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive approach to legislative duties. “This measure ensures a thorough and comprehensive approach to legislative responsibilities,” the statement noted.
Both chambers of the National Assembly stressed their commitment to fulfilling their legislative mandates effectively. They also appealed to stakeholders and Nigerians for understanding, emphasising the importance of prioritising national interests during the ongoing budget process.
