Tensions Rise in Lagos Assembly as Obasa Challenges Impeachment

Security has been tightened at the Lagos State House of Assembly as lawmakers prepare for a potentially contentious plenary session today. This development follows the removal of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, on January 13, 2025, over allegations of misconduct and financial impropriety. Mojisola Meranda, the Deputy Speaker, has since taken over the leadership, presiding over two plenary sessions in Obasa’s absence. However, the former Speaker has continued to insist that he remains the rightful leader of the House.

Addressing his supporters over the weekend, Obasa denied all allegations leveled against him, dismissing claims of financial misappropriation as baseless. Refuting accusations of spending N16 billion on constructing a gate and N40 billion on vehicles, he described the figures as exaggerated and implausible. Obasa further asserted that his removal did not follow due process, emphasizing his willingness to step aside if the proper procedures were adhered to.

The situation has created a tense atmosphere within the Assembly complex, with staff and legislative aides now required to present valid identification for access. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command has pledged to maintain order outside the Assembly premises. Commissioner of Police, Ishola Olawale, stated that while the police have no jurisdiction within the legislative chambers, they will ensure public safety around the Assembly and across the state.

Reports suggest that Obasa and members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) are scheduled to meet with the President later this week to explore a political resolution. Sources indicate that both Obasa and the GAC are committed to abiding by Tinubu’s guidance on the matter, though the former Speaker is reportedly hesitant to attend today’s session at the Assembly complex.

Former Deputy Majority Leader Olumuyiwa Jimoh, remarked that the allegations against Obasa had been simmering for years, with many staff and lawmakers expressing relief at his removal. Jimoh also underscored the fragility of a Speaker’s position, noting that colleagues wield the power to replace the leadership at any time.
