Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, said that the Federal Government received over N2.4 billion in marriage contracts through its marriage registry in 2024.
According to Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the marriage registry has become a significant source of money for the ministry, with earnings exceeding expectations in 2023.
He also claimed that the Federal Government intends to improve border security in order to curb the influx of irregular migrants.
On Tuesday, he spoke to the media in Abuja alongside the leaders of the ministry’s agencies.
The minister also revealed that expatriate quota applications generated over 3.2 billion naira, representing a one-hundred-fifty percent increase in total revenue.
He noted that the marriage registry has become a significant source of money, with the ministry collecting more than N892 million as of October 31, 2023, exceeding its estimated earnings from marriage contracts.
Tunji-Ojo further stated that the issuance of expatriate quotas contributed greatly to the ministry’s earnings. He stated that in 2023, the ministry generated more than 1.1 billion from expatriate quota permits, exceeding the N600 million objective by more than 600 million.
