Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow demonstration, has been charged with cybercrime by the Nigeria Police Force before Justice Musa Liman of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The police further claimed that Sowore, using his X handle, stated that “IGP Kayode Egbetokun will destroy the Nigeria police if we don’t act now.”
On Monday, January 27, 2025, Sowore responded to the police’s request and was questioned in the Force Criminal Investigation Department.
He was then given administrative bail, but he refused to accept the bail restrictions and remained in detention. The police later filed a 16-count charge of cybercrime against him.
According to the police, on December 20, 2024, Sowore used his X handle to label the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, “the illegal IG of the Nigeria Police Force.”.
The police are accusing Sowore of posting an image of Egbetokun on his X account with the caption: “Mediocrity, incompetence, corruption, a country run by characterless people cannot make progress.”
The police further claimed that Sowore, using his X handle, stated that “IGP Kayode Egbetokun will destroy the Nigeria police if we don’t act now.”
He pleaded not guilty to the 16-count charge of alleged cybercrime.
