The House of Representatives has passed a bill seeking to amend the Federal Polytechnic Act. The proposed legislation, which scaled its second reading, aims to modify the Federal Polytechnics Act, Cap 17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

The bill, co-sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Lagos lawmaker Fuad Laguda, seeks to introduce additional functions for polytechnics in Nigeria.

According to Laguda, the amendment is necessary to align polytechnic education with international best practices.

Laguda explained that the Principal Act, Federal Polytechnics Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, was enacted to establish polytechnics across the country.

However, he noted that the Act needs to be amended to reflect the changing needs of the economy.

The proposed amendment seeks to expand the membership of polytechnic governing councils to include representatives from technical institutions.

This, according to Laguda, will help to strengthen the polytechnic system and enhance technical education.

The bill also aims to broaden the functions of federal polytechnics and establish a clearer, more result-oriented administrative structure.

This, Laguda said, will help to enhance the quality of polytechnic education and make it more relevant to the needs of the economy.

The House of Representatives has referred the bill to the Committee on Polytechnic and

Higher Technical Education for further legislative action.

The committee is expected to review the bill and make recommendations for its passage.

The passage of the bill is seen as a significant step towards enhancing the quality of polytechnic education in Nigeria.

Stakeholders in the education sector have welcomed the development, saying it will help to address the skills gap in the economy.

The amendment is also expected to help polytechnics to become more responsive to the needs of the economy.

By introducing additional functions and broadening the scope of polytechnic education.

The bill aims to make polytechnics more relevant to the needs of the economy.

The House of Representatives has been working to enhance the quality of education in Nigeria.

and the passage of the bill is seen as a significant step in this direction.

The bill is expected to have a positive impact on the education sector and the economy as a whole.
