The Nigerian Senate has come out to clarify the reason behind the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

According to the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, the senator was suspended for six months due to gross

misconduct and not for her claims of sexual harassment.

Bamidele explained that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension was a result of her persistent acts of misconduct, blatant

disregard for the provisions of the Senate Standing Orders, and gross indiscipline. He emphasized that the

suspension was not related to her petition or claims of sexual harassment.

The Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges had found Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of violating multiple sections of

the Senate Rules, including refusal to occupy her assigned seat during plenary, speaking without being recognized by

the presiding officer, and engaging in unruly and disruptive behavior.

Bamidele stressed that these actions constituted a direct challenge to the authority of the Senate and necessitated

disciplinary action to maintain order and integrity. He also explained that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition was “rightfully

discountenanced” due to its failure to adhere to established procedural requirements.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has also weighed in on the matter, stating that it will hear from the Senate before

addressing Akpoti-Uduaghan’s case. IPU President Tulia Ackson emphasized that the organization will give

opportunities to both sides to be heard before taking any action.

Meanwhile, the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has expressed support for Senate President Godswill Akpabio over

the Red Chamber’s action against Akpoti-Uduaghan. The forum’s chairman, Ambassador Godknows Igali, stated that

they are strongly behind Akpabio.

The suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan has generated controversy, with some groups and individuals criticizing the

Senate’s action. However, the Senate has maintained that its decision was based on the senator’s misconduct and not on any other factor.
