Former Bayelsa Governor Faults Tinubu’s Declaration of State of Emergency

Former Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as a “power grab.”

Dickson, who is also a senator representing Bayelsa West, vowed to mobilize his colleagues to ensure that the President does not get the necessary support to validate his action.

Dickson’s comments came during an interview with selected journalists in Abuja, where he argued that the declaration of a state of emergency is unconstitutional. He emphasized that the President’s action is a clear violation of the rights of the people of Rivers State.

The former governor also pointed out that the Constitution requires a minimum of 73 senators and 240 members of the House of Representatives to be present for the declaration of a state of emergency to be valid. He expressed doubts that the President has the necessary support for his action.

Dickson’s protest comes on the heels of failed attempts by the Senate to deliberate on a motion sponsored by the Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, on the Rivers State crisis. The debate on the state of emergency was eventually postponed till Thursday.

The former governor insisted that he and his colleagues will work against the Senate approving the President’s declaration. He urged Tinubu to learn from the leadership style of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who declared a state of emergency in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe States without sacking the elected officials.

Dickson argued that Jonathan’s approach showed a clear understanding of what it means to be the President for all. He emphasized that the state of emergency is intended to reinforce the existing government structure, not to subvert or replace it.

The former governor’s comments have sparked a heated debate on the Rivers State crisis, with many calling for calm and restraint. The situation has raised questions about the role of the President in declaring a state of emergency and the implications for the people of Rivers State.

As the controversy continues to unfold, Dickson’s comments serve as a reminder of the need for leaders to prioritize the welfare of their people. The situation requires a thorough examination of the facts and a commitment to finding a peaceful resolution.

The Rivers State crisis has taken a toll on the lives of innocent people, and it is essential to prioritize their welfare and safety. The controversy surrounding the declaration of a state of emergency highlights the need for leaders to work together to find a peaceful solution.

Dickson’s comments on the Rivers State crisis highlight the need for leaders to prioritize the welfare of their people and to work together to find a peaceful solution. The situation requires calm and restraint, as well as a commitment to upholding the Constitution and the rule of law.
