Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, has outlined the criteria that would prompt his acceptance of any potential merger between his party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
In response to remarks made by the PDP presidential candidate and former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, regarding the possibility of a merger between their respective parties, the former governor of Anambra State articulated during an interview with NoireTV over the weekend that he would consider entering into a merger agreement with any party or individual only if it is in the best interest of Nigeria.
He lauded Atiku’s readiness to support him if it proves beneficial to the southeastern region and underscored the importance of ensuring that any potential merger or alliance is centered on enhancing governance and aiding the impoverished, rather than solely focusing on electoral victory or seizing control of the state.
“I commend Atiku for his statement, particularly where he expressed his willingness to back me if it involves the South East. Regarding the prospect of a merger and the convergence of parties, I have consistently maintained that I am in favor of such an arrangement as long as it contributes to the betterment of Nigeria and the effective governance of the country. If the aim is merely to facilitate electoral success or to exert control over the state apparatus, I am not in favor of it. My aspiration is not driven by a desperate desire for the presidency, but rather a fervent longing to witness a Nigeria that functions efficiently, especially for the less fortunate, given our considerable potential.
“Therefore, if the merger is intended to facilitate the effective governance of Nigeria and address all the issues that would lead to an enhanced quality of life for the populace, I am supportive of it. Whether it occurs at the party level, individual level, or any other level, it is imperative that we unite to construct a more prosperous Nigeria.”
During an interview with BBC Hausa, Atiku has been in discussions with Obi regarding the potential for a merger and has pledged his support for any individual selected to represent the PDP in the upcoming 2027 elections, regardless of whether the candidate hails from the south-east.
“To anyone speculating about potential discord between myself and Obi, I can assure you that no such issue will arise between us. Furthermore, we are fully committed to endorsing any candidate chosen to represent us in the forthcoming elections.
“I have consistently articulated in my prior addresses that should our parties merge and agree on a candidate from the south-east, we will endorse this candidate provided they meet the requisite qualifications,” Atiku remarked.
