Super Eagles’ Midfielder Wilfred Ndidi Apologizes for Costly Miss in World Cup Qualifier

Super Eagles midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, has publicly apologized for a missed scoring opportunity that contributed to Nigeria’s disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in the World Cup qualifier last Tuesday.

The match, which took place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, was crucial for Nigeria as they hoped to secure

a vital win in their bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The Super Eagles had taken the lead in the 74th minute

through Victor Osimhen’s third goal in two qualifying matches, but Ndidi’s miss in the latter stages of the game

proved to be costly.

The miss has sparked debate across social media platforms, with some fans expressing frustration, suggesting that

the Leicester City midfielder could have sealed the victory for Nigeria. However, others have defended Ndidi, arguing

that football is a team effort and that everyone, not just one player, should take responsibility for the disappointing result.

The draw left the Super Eagles in fourth place on the qualification table with seven points after six games, with only

four more matches to play before the final qualification spots are determined. Despite the criticism, Ndidi took to

Instagram to address his supporters and fans.

In response to a harsh comment from a fan who criticized him, the 27-year-old midfielder wrote, “Please make una no

vex for the chance I miss, nobody perfect for him job.” His response shows his awareness of the disappointment,

while also reiterating that mistakes are part of the game and that nobody is perfect.

The draw meant that Nigeria missed a golden opportunity to climb to second place in the group, a position that would

have boosted their hopes of securing a spot at the next World Cup. With four matches remaining, doubts are

beginning to creep in about Nigeria’s chances of qualifying. The Super Eagles now face an uphill battle to secure

enough points in their final qualifying fixtures to ensure they make it to the tournament in 2026.

Ndidi, however, remains focused on his club commitments as Leicester City prepares for an upcoming Premier

League clash against reigning champions Manchester City on April 2. Despite Leicester’s struggles in the league,

having lost six consecutive matches, Ndidi and his teammates are determined to give their best in an attempt to

upset Manchester City, who have also shown signs of inconsistency in recent weeks.

While the missed chance will undoubtedly linger in his mind, Wilfred Ndidi has promised to continue working hard

both for his country and his club. He remains resolute in his commitment to the Super Eagles and hopes to redeem himself in future qualifiers as Nigeria seeks to secure its place at the 2026 World Cup.
