Muslims equipping up for the Eid El-Kabir celebrations will have to reexamine their choice of delicacy as the cost of new tomatoes in markets over Lagos has risen by over 100% within the month of May alone.
Dealers have ascribed the spike to customary regular variances within the amount of tomatoes created. They say the collection period for the current species of tomatoes being sold is nearly over with the coming of the damp season over the nation.
Umar Tanko, a tomato vendor at the prevalent Mile 12 Showcase in Lagos, told Nairametrics that a basket of premium quality new tomatoes, which sold for between N50,000 and N80,000 in April, presently offers for between N140,000 and N150,000.

On the other hand, lower-quality tomatoes, harmed amid the travel from the North to the South, as of now offer for around N60,000 to N100,000, depending on the seriousness of the harm. Final month, a basket of comparable quality went for N30,000.
Whereas tomatoes more often than not take the highlight, new pepper, another critical fixing within the prevalent Jollof rice delicacy, has too seen a about 100% increment over the past month.
According to Umar, “This custard bucket of pepper sold for N3,000 or N4,000 a final month, presently it offers for N8,000.”
Also, Shefiu, a tomato seller at the Flour Nourishment Showcase in Ikorodu, Lagos, said the cause of the spike in tomato prices can be ascribed to the diminished supply taking after the start of the stormy season.
Agreeing with him, the rains have begun within the North, flagging the conclusion of the current species of tomatoes being devoured. He is so famous that the importation of tomatoes from Cameroon and Ghana seems to offer assistance back the supply lack.
On costs, Shefiu said, “We sold the custard bucket of tomatoes final month for N4,000 and N5,000. But presently, I offer it for N10,000. Mine is cheap since I have somebody providing me specifically from Kano. I do not purchase from Mile 12.”

Cost of tomatoes in other Nigerian cities
Moreover, checks by Nairametrics on the costs of tomatoes over Lagos, Edo, Abuja, and Delta within the month of May appeared a comparable design of increment.
Inhabitants in Effurun and Warri in Delta State complained that the slightest sum of tomatoes anybody can purchase is N500, and a wicker container of new quality tomatoes offers around N120,000 to N140,000.
In Onitsha, Anambra State, the cost of a bushel of tomatoes ranges from N110,000 to N140,000.
The spike in the costs of new tomatoes includes the expansion emergency right now being seen by Nigerians. In April, year-on-year expansion rose for the 16th sequential month, dating back to December 2022 when expansion finally declined.
Agreeing to the NBS Nourishment Cost Observe in April, the cost of 1kg of tomatoes has risen year-on-year by 131.58 between April 2023 and April 2024. Be that as it may, between Walk and April 2024, the normal cost of 1kg of tomatoes expanded by 17.06%.
A later SBM Insights Jollof Rice List famous that the normal taken a toll of cooking Jollof rice across major cities within the nation hit N17,000 in Walk 2024 from N13,106 in October 2023.
The increment in the costs of jollof rice’s essential fixings (tomatoes and new pepper) could worsen the sum Nigerians spend on their cherished delicacy as Eid El-Kabir approaches. This might predict, as the SBM Insights report states, a “crisis at the table.”
