member till further notice.
According to the 2023 LP presidential campaigner, the former governor of Anambra State has not joined the Social
Democratic Party (SDP).

“As far as I am concerned, His Excellency, Peter Obi, is a member of the Labour Party. It remains so until there is any
other thing that may come up,” he said.
The LP leader was responding to a statement made by Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 flag bearer for the SDP, stating
that Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had started discussions about joining the party.
Olu Agunloye, the National Secretary of the SDP, has previously claimed that Obi’s men were lobbying his party before
the next election.
Tanko went on to say that the Labour Party’s leaders would clarify their stances to Nigerians in the days ahead,
particularly in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling dismissing Julius Abure as the national chairman of the LP.

“As I speak to you right now, there is going to be a meeting possibly within the week by the leaders of the party to
make fundamental positions clear to everyone and in line with the position of the Supreme Court ruling, and that, of course, will put the whole matter to rest,” he stated.
Tanko further stated the Labour Party’s leaders would clarify their stance to Nigerians in the days ahead, particularly
in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling dismissing Julius Abure as the national chairman of the LP.

Discussions about an inter-party alliance culminated on Thursday, March 20, 2025, ahead of the 2027 elections, when
opposition leader Atiku announced a coalition to unseat incumbent Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress
(APC), whose administration has been accused of mismanaging the economy, resulting in an unprecedented cost of
living and all-time high inflation. Obi, former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, and others were also part of the coalition.
The coalition is relying on the size of the votes that Atiku and Obi received in the most recent poll. With a total of over
12 million votes, Atiku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Obi of the Labour Party came in second and third, respectively, more than four million votes ahead of Tinubu, who was proclaimed the victor by election arbiter INEC in 2023.
Politicians in the three parties appear to have chosen the SDP as their favourite due to a long list of court cases stemming from intra-party disputes, prolonged leadership crises that have rocked the PDP and the LP, and alleged abuse of certain APC members.
