The Vice Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Professor Nse Essien, has issued a strong warning to newly admitted students against engaging in cybercrime, emphasizing that any involvement will attract serious consequences.
He made this known during the university’s 15th matriculation ceremony held at the main campus in Ikot Akpaden. Addressing the over 3,200 matriculating students, Prof. Essien acknowledged the dual nature of new media, its power for good and its potential for harm.
He cautioned students to steer clear of its misuse, especially in the realm of internet fraud, which has seen rising concern among young people nationwide.
“Cybercrime attracts penalties,” Essien said. “Be responsible for your actions. Our academic and administrative staff, including your Head of Department and Dean of Students’ Affairs, are available to support you through any academic or personal challenges.”

The Vice Chancellor praised the students for their resilience in gaining admission and urged them to make the most of their time in the university by embracing learning, personal growth, and ethical conduct. He stressed the importance of discipline, diligence, integrity, and faith as guiding principles.
He also encouraged the students to develop a mindset of perseverance in the face of challenges, reminding them that true success is not just about academic performance but about character and the values they uphold throughout their journey.
The ceremony concluded with 3,236 students taking the matriculation oath across eight faculties, pledging to reject cultism, cybercrime, and secret societies, setting a tone for a new chapter focused on responsibility and academic excellence.
