The Agege Youth Vanguard (AYV), which is a coalition of youth organisations, has announced its support for Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, the son of Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, in his campaign to take over as the next chairman of the Agege Local Government Area.
Group members conveyed their confidence in Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa’s capacity to improve the council and expand on its current progress. The endorsement comes just before the July local government election.
Ismaeel Garba, the AYV group’s coordinator, stated during a news conference held at the Agege Local Government Secretariat that Obasa’s history of youth involvement, capacity for leadership, and dedication to grassroots development were the main reasons for the endorsement.
Group participants conveyed their faith in Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa’s capacity to improve the council and expand on its current progress. The AYV leaders underlined the value of young people getting involved in politics and government, pointing out that Obasa’s son’s campaign signifies a generational change and a chance to promote progressive leadership in Lagos State’s Agege area.
Garba went on to say that Agege’s best chance to succeed should not be disregarded simply because its favourite candidate’s father holds the position of Speaker of the House of Assembly.
“To us in Agege Youth Vanguard, the journey to the promised land starts with ensuring that the council does not fall into the wrong hands as regards the next chairman and seven councillors who will manage the affairs of millions of residents and business operators that make up our community,” he said.
The Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government Area in Lagos State, Mr Oluwagbenga Abiola, had on Wednesday reportedly withdrawn his interest to vie for the chairmanship position.
Abiola was quoted as saying that he stepped down for Obasa’s son out of loyalty to the Speaker rather than by compulsion.
