Ododo Promises Community-Owned Mining Operations in Kogi

Kogi State is charting a new course for economic growth through a strategic push in mining operations. Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s administration has unveiled plans to make mining operations in Kogi community-owned, following the acquisition of 15 mining licenses.

Ismaila Isah, Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, recently assured the public that with the recent acquisition of 15 mining licenses, local communities would benefit immensely from the emerging mining economy.

During a feature on Rapid TV in Abuja, Isah outlined that the state government has formulated plans to make the mining sector more inclusive, with a particular emphasis on community ownership.

“Kogi is rich in mineral deposits, with over 32 mineral resources available in commercial quantities,” he said. The government has established a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under the Solid Minerals Development Company to facilitate local and foreign investments in the mining sector.

A core part of the strategy is the involvement of local communities, with the government encouraging them to form cooperatives. These cooperatives will enable communities to take ownership stakes in the mining activities happening in their areas.

“Beyond corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, we want our communities to be active participants in the mining process,” Isah added.

As part of their youth-focused economic agenda, the state government has announced plans to train 25,000 young people to take the lead in the mining operations.

This initiative aims to equip Kogi’s youth with the skills and knowledge needed to lead in the solid minerals sector.

Governor Ododo’s administration is also making strides to attract international investment in Kogi’s mining sector.

Isah revealed that the Governor recently visited China to discuss potential investment opportunities, as well as technology and manpower exchanges. These collaborations are expected to enhance critical sectors, such as agriculture, healthcare, education, power, and transportation.

“We are building an administration that is proactive and forward-thinking,” said Isah. “Governor Ododo is committed to attracting genuine investors who align with the state’s development agenda. Kogi has a lot to offer, including fertile lands and mineral resources. Our human resources are also among the best in the world, making the state an ideal destination for investors.”

Aside from mining, the Ododo-led administration is focusing heavily on agricultural transformation. The state government has implemented a policy of “one farmer, one hectare,” ensuring that each farming group or individual has access to at least one hectare of land for large-scale production. With modern equipment, such as tractors, the government is pushing for increased agricultural productivity, particularly in rice production.

Isah also highlighted the government’s focus on supporting marginalized groups through a robust social register, which will help ensure that grants and support reach micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), people with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.

“Governor Ododo is committed to rapid economic transformation. His administration is particularly focused on building a sustainable infrastructure that benefits every sector of the state. Whether it’s agriculture, mining, or social welfare, we’re focused on delivering results,” Isah emphasized.

In the coming year, the administration plans to expand agricultural initiatives to over 50,000 hectares, far surpassing last year’s achievements. Additionally, there will be an increase in the acquisition of modern farming equipment, ensuring farmers have the necessary tools to thrive.

Governor Ododo’s commitment to community involvement and grassroots development is clear. By focusing on local empowerment and creating avenues for youth participation in critical sectors like mining and agriculture, the administration aims to leave a lasting legacy for future generations in Kogi State.
